Description

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 2/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  5. Make a well in the center and pour in the heavy cream. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat into a 1-inch thick circle.
  7. Cut the circle into 8 wedges.
  8. Place wedges on the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Brush the tops with beaten egg.
  10. Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown.
  11. Let cool on a wire rack.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to the heavy cream.
  • If you don’t have heavy cream, half-and-half can be used, but the scones may be less rich.
  • Store cooled scones in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
